Working in underground is a stressful, demanding, and potentially dangerous operation; such a unique environment requires specialized training to ensure safety.
The Safety and Hazard Awareness for Tunnels (SHAFT) courses are designed to teach skills for working safely in tunnels constructed using a tunnel boring machine (TBM).
The program was developed by the Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust with input and consultation from several organizations.
In addition to classroom lecture and discussion, participants have the experience of training in a simulated, life-like tunneling environment.
For the first time, the Northwest Laborers-Employers Training Trust will be participating in the North American Tunneling conference in Los Angeles.
